BROOK BENTON – MOTHER NATURE, FATHER TIME

authors: SCOPITONES – duration: 03:05

How time flies! Today, exactly half a year ago, United Vloggers took off. Since then we published 47 posts; that’s an average of 7,8 per month, or 1.9 a week. That’s not bad but not good enough either. Therefore we hereby solemnly pledge to rejuvenate; more postings and more importantly: We will finally start assigning commissions to talented directors. Would you like to help us and become a commissioning editor for UV? Then please let us know: info[at]unitedvloggers[dot]com

Also we would love to see you sending us (perma)links to your favorite videos (not per se your own): submissions[at]unitedvloggers[dot]com

Thank you so much!

To rejoice our existence we present you a fantastic music video: BROOK BENTON, singing Mother Nature, Father Time. The video comes from a great site called SCOPITONES, completely dedicated to the illustrious Scopitone. A Scopitone was a film jukebox invented in France in the early 1960’s. The films, the precursors of todays music videos, were called Scopitones. This is what Time Magazine wrote in 1964:

TIME MAGAZINE
Scooby-Ooby Scopitone
Aug. 21, 1964

“In some 500 bars, restaurants and servicemen’s clubs throughout the U.S., the center of attention these days is a monstrous new machine called Scopitone. It is a cross between a jukebox and TV. For $.25 a throw, Scopitone projects any one of 36 musical movies on a 26-in. screen, flooding the premises with delirious color and hi-fi scooby-ooby-doo for three whole minutes. It makes a sobering combination.

Scopitone, which has been the rage of France for the past four years, was invented by a firm that sounds as if it had been founded by Jules Verne; Compagnie d’Applications Mecaniques à Electronique au Cinéma et à Atomistique (CAMECA). Since then it has spread from Marseilles to Macao; Nikita Khrushchev even has one, loaded with Marxian uplift featurettes.

Actually, Scopitone’s “musies” are descended from U.S. Soundies, which during World War II filled bus terminals and B-girl grottoes with grainy, black-and-white productions of The Flat Foot Floogee with the Floy Floy and A Boy in Khaki, a Girl in Lace. Television and Lucky Strike’s Hit Parade put a merciful end to Soundies, but it looks as if Scopitone will be here to stay awhile.”

WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS: EPISODE 3 – SECURED COMPOUND

authors: WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS – duration: 03:27

It is a fascinating development indeed: Vlogging American soldiers! Winning Hearts ans Minds, a new video weblog … “chronicles the mission of the 321st Civil Affairs in Afghanistan. Their sole mission is to bring order to devastated lands, while winning the hearts and minds of people that live there.”

Of course one needs to be suspicious: Are we being tricked? Is this a clever way of the American Army to win OUR hearts and minds? Let alone that the term ‘”winning hearts and minds” derives from the Vietnam war, a not-so-successful American operation, to say the least from the ongoing Iraq disaster. Even so, it is worthwhile to follow these Civil Affairs chaps; you get a glimpse of the life of ordinary soldiers amidst a cuckoo habitat.

In this revlog… “Sgts Kling, Carillo, Reisz and Cpt Corsten meet the children of the community and then take time out inside the secured compound. Sgt Kling discusses what it takes to make a difference in Afghanistan, before experiencing the taste sensation of the region’s first fast food restaurant. Basically, everything tastes like chicken …”.

Equipment was provided and editing undertaken pro bono by Q2 ENTERTAINMENT, a New York based media company.

DEVVO AT THE PARK

author: DAVID FIRTH. devvo’s page: DEVVO’S CORNER – duration: 02:26

David Firth is a young and talented English animator (we will revlog one of his animations soon) but besides that he is a shrewd filmmaker who came up in 2005 with a character called Devvo. As Firth writes:

“Devvo is Darren Devonshire, a “chav” from the Doncaster/Hull area. Devvo lets me follow him around and film his life in exchange for cigarettes, alcohol and small change. The … films are documentaries about the “chav” scene/problem in Northern England.”

The Chav problem? Chavs, aka Hoodies, Neds, Townies, Kevs, Charvers, Chorer, Steeks, Spides, Bazzas, Yarcos, Ratboys, Skangers, Scutters, Janners, Stigs, Scallies, Kappa Slappers or Hood Rats are young British lower-class kids who cultivate a low life subculture… “fixated on fashions derived from American Hip-Hop (African-American) and Guido (Italian-American) fashions and stereotypes such as gold jewellery and designer clothing combined with elements of working class British street fashion. Chavs are generally considered to have no respect for society, and to be ignorant or unintelligent.” (Wikipedia)

We kinda dig these mockers. Devvo is recently becoming a pop star as well; check out his latest hit: DONNY SOLIDER!

authors: HAPPY TREE FRIENDS. part of: MONDO MINI SHOWS – duration: 02:49

It’s finally summer so we will extend our focus a little here at UV. The following is not recommended for small children nor big babies. It’s Summertime Smoochie… School is out. Have some fun in the sun with Petunia!

About HAPPY TREE FRIENDS:

“The Happy Tree Friends are cute, cuddly animals whose daily adventures always end up going horribly wrong. No matter how innocently their day begins, it always ends in mayhem. The ensemble cast includes Cuddles, the cutest darn rabbit you’ll ever meet, and Petunia, a sweet girl skunk always mindful to wear air freshener. Traveling through picturesque settings and speaking in a kooky language all their own, the Happy Tree Friends never know what chaos lingers just around the bend.”
