MARK

There’s a new vlog around, called INVISIBLE PEOPLE. It is made by Mark:

“Who am I? My name is Mark and I live in Los Angeles which I affectionately call LaLa Land… I literally am 7 weeks from being homeless myself, but I had to do something – so I started a vlog that will hopefully keep the homeless conversation going by telling their story. Technically it could be better. I don’t have anything but this little laptop that is not made to cut video and a small camera. It’s a miracle that the laptop is even allowing me to compress the data. I just took action with what I have.”

Mark became some sort of (reborn) Christian, after a living a life as homeless person for many years. He dicided to record and publish raw and unedited interviews with people living on the streets. Listen to the story of another Mark, who was working until recently for an oil and gas company in Beverly Hills and who got fired because he criticized his company for lying about their profits and returns:

“At first Mark didn’t want to talk on camera. We chatted for a bit and as I started to walk away he asked for a business card. He wanted to know what the video would be used for, how it would be used, and what organizations I was connected to. I assured him this project was completely independent and my only agenda was to tell the homeless story with real people telling real stories unedited and uncensored. Mark is extremely intelligent and articulate. His story really wrecked me because I could identify with so much of it. This is a great story. I hope Mark’s story and the other stories on this vlog inspires you to continue the homeless conversation.”

SHADOW WORLD: THEY GOT BILLS TO PAY

author: DAVID KESSLER – duration: 02:40

AN INTIMATE LOOK AT A PLACE WHERE TIME IS MEASURED NOT BY THE MOVEMENTS OF THE SUN BUT BY THE RUMBLING OF THE EL TRAIN. PHILADELPHIA, FRONT ST./KENSINGTON AVE.

You are watching a short monologue from a woman who happens to be a crack addict and a prostitute. Her situation is sad but she ain’t. She lives her life under the northern El tracks of the Philadelphian subway, where David Kessler has been following the lives of many other people as well. He cut his material in 26 short, unpolished doc clips that are fascinating to watch. Or as our vlogbrother JAY DEDMAN says in a great article on both the project, the people, history and links to the best parts of the series (published by Philadelphia Weekly):

“Shadow World is such a great example of what Web video can be. It’s not TV. It’s not film. It’s uniquely suited to the Web with its short vignettes on life in this part of Philly. Kessler records people who’d go totally unnoticed. It’s a great counterpoint to the argument that Web video is just self-centered crap.”

“Before video blogs, you may have expected to see Shadow World in the form of a documentary film. This would force the creator to sacrifice years for the project and raise tens of thousands of dollars. The creator would hope to get the movie played in a couple film festivals. But now Kessler can explore this Philly neighborhood with an inexpensive digital camera, edit on his laptop and put it on the Web the next day, with a potential audience of millions.”

READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE (very much recommended).

This is the kind of neighborhood where Barack Obama once was a community organizer. Just crossed my mind! …& fingers…

JOSH WOLF ON THE COLBERT REPORT

author: COMEDY CENTRAL – duration: 05:43

Many of you will remember the vile fate of Josh Wolf. Josh, an American video blogger, was jailed by a Federal district court on August 1, 2006 for refusing to turn over a collection of videotapes he recorded during a July 2005 demonstration in San Francisco, California (to see both the published video and the original footage: CLICK HERE). He served 226 days in prison, longer than any other journalist in U.S. history has served for protecting source materials (BBC article: CLICK HERE). He was finally released on April 3, 2007. (New York Times article: CLICK HERE). Now Josh is running for mayor of the city of San Francisco. We hereby show you Josh’s recent appearance on one of the funniest and smartest television shows in the USA, The Colbert Report. Enjoy!

VIDEO CHAT WITH RICHARD BLUESTEIN

VIDEO CHAT WITH RICHARD BLUESTEIN

by: vPIP
Embed (copy & paste):

Some extracts of a video chat with Richard Bluestein. He was the first vlogger I ever discovered and since then we met a few times. Richard is also known as Madge Weinstein, the bloated lesbian vegemite, as she likes to call herself. Madge appears on both shows that Richard produces: The queercast YEAST RADIO (paid & published by PODSHOW, the on-line podcasting publishing house, co-founded by Adam Curry) and INSANE FILMS, a video blog with a peculiar mix of political items, sensational outfits, vulgar questioning and much more.

Richard is a hard working man: He produces 4 radio shows a week plus several vlogs. He makes a good living as podcaster / vlogger and you might even call him a professional. But when it comes to it he doesn’t give shit about well shot or lit images, perfect editing or common decencies. Maybe that’s what I admire the most in Bluestein/Weinstein; his constant fight against hypocrisy and his complete sincerity.
