ARTISTS, PROGRAMMERS AND ACTIVISTS CONSIDER A GENERAL STRIKE: BUT IS IT ART?

author: GEORGE COATES – duration: 05:04

Amongst the strangest and most intriguing vlog shows we find BetterBadNews. How to explain it? Maybe it’s best to quote it’s creator, George Coates, who is a well known theater director, working and living in San Francisco, USA:

“BetterBadNews is a video blog using voice, character and audio visual support to extend and recontextualize the conversation… Text is swiped into teleprompter software enabling a panel of on-camera talking heads or “blog speakers” to bring voice and character to moderated discussions and forums taking place online…”

“Why? To develop new strategies for surviving the ongoing culture war responsible for the steady and strategic de-funding of independent creative voices in the arts, including small presses, experimental theaters, and alternative media and to provide opportunities for non-commercial voices to be heard in networked media environments.”

BetterBadNews is somehow mimicking and ridiculing television; the ‘talking heads’ read from a teleprompter (aka as an autocue, a device used in television to project a speaker’s script out of sight of the audience). The talking is mixed with a mash-up, combining different audio tracks (coming from old movies and such) and clips of video.

Maybe it is best that you just watch our revlog, for it is both funny and enlightening. We choose this particular one because it is reflecting on videoblogging as an art genre, and more in particular on Jay Dedman’s video ‘Looking at things’, which you find below. Check!

LOOKING AT THINGS…

author: JAY DEDMAN – duration: 00:58

Of all the videobloggers in the wide, wild world there is one man I adore mostly indeed. For he is a good man, a kind man, always helping others, working like a maniac and above all, he is the one and only true Vlogfather, amen. (Am i sounding pathetic? Please pardon me CLARK ov SATURN).

Jay is not only one of the earliest birds in the videoblogging community, he is truly one of it’s inspiring visionaries. From the moment he met PETER VAN DIJCK in the early spring of 2004 he was immediately hooked to the new medium of the Vlog, bringing a new way of video distribution, but moreover, a new way of communicating. Together they started the Yahoo VIDEOBLOGGING GROUP (June 1, 2004) and the rest? Well the rest is history.

Since then Jay, together with his fiancée RYANNE HODSON, helped setting new (technical) standards, writing, filming, teaching & creating numerous video blogging projects like FIREANT, VLOGGERCON, HAVE MONEY WILL VLOG etc.

We now present to you one of our favorite videos from Jay, only 1 minute long; a true Momentshowing…

AMY (part 1)

author: MARíA GÓMEZ – duration: 06:10

Vlogger María Gómez moved from Colombia to the US some years ago, as did many of her fellow countrymen. In fact, 4 million Colombians live outside Colombia (BBC article HERE). After hearing many moving stories from these exiles Maria decided to do a vlog project about their lives; the Colombia Migration Project. We choose to revlog part 1 of an interview with Amy. María writes about her:

“Amy is originally from Cali, Colombia. She studied nursing before migrating to the U.S. In her thirty years in NYC Amy has gone through very difficult moments but thanks to her brave spirit she is now working in her field (nursing) and she holds a good position at the NGO she works for. Amy is the co-founder of the Center for Immigrant Families in NYC. She was a member of the school board for seven years.

She worked in the lower East Side taking over abandoned buildings and creating community gardens. She currently lives in the Lower East Side in a co-op building that she and her friends squatted in the eighties. Amy has done an admirable community work and she is mother of a nineteen year old girl. She was named “Woman of the Year” by El Diario La Prensa in NYC”.
